THE ANNUAL MID-YEAR SNO-KING SG FAMILY POTLUCK DINNER is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3rd at the Edmonds United Methodist Church located at 828 Caspers St., Edmonds, WA, in the Fellowship Hall on the lower level (west entrance). Dinner will be served starting at 6:30 p.m. followed by MS Volunteer awards, special recognitions and live entertainment.

Each SG member or family is asked to provide either a salad, hot dish or dessert. The Sno-King SG will provide a meat platter, hot dish, rolls and punch. Please mark your serving dishes and utensils so they don’t get lost and remember to pick up your dishes and take your leftovers with you when you leave.

You should plan on bringing your food items around 6:00 p.m. so we can begin serving dinner as close to 6:30 p.m. as possible.  Please have your food on plates or in containers ready to serve.  Ovens and refrigerators are available for keeping things warm or chilled as needed.

Every year the food gets better and better and there always seems to be more than enough to go around. So plan now and mark your calendar for this big event. Remember, this is a family event for the immediate family, including grandparents and caregivers.

Anyone wishing to help with setup and cleanup is asked to call Bill Brayer (206-718-0894) prior to June 3rd.

A special treat for the evening will be a musical performance by Sarah Greenwood, our special guest, who will be honored for hosting a musical benefit at Yelm High School on Friday, December 21, 2007 for MSHH. Sarah was one of the main performers in the benefit and received quite a write-up in the south end local papers.

Sarah designated MSHH as the recipient of all monetary donations generated by the event. The benefit raised $1,496 for the MSHH financial assistance fund.

Remember, the upcoming dinner is a family event. All we ask is that you RSVP to either a member of the telephone committee or by calling 425-712-1804 and leaving your name and the number in your party planning to attend. This will help us in setting up the room and planning for the food provided by the SG.

This is our big annual pre-summer event and we hope to see you all there. Remember there are no SG meetings in July or August, but the Wednesday afternoon SG socials will continue throughout the summer months.

For additional information call Bill Brayer, Sno-King SG Facilitator, at 425-712-1804.

THE SEATTLE SG ANNUAL MID-YEAR FAMILY POTLUCK LUNCH is scheduled for Tuesday, June 10th, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Mt. Baker Park Presbyterian Church located at 3202–37th Ave. South, Seattle, WA. There is a wheelchair accessible entrance on the North side of the building. (Please note the time change).

This annual event is a family event for immediate families, including grandparents and caregivers.

Remember, that the Seattle SG doesn’t meet in July or August.

Members of both SG’s are invited to attend either or both of the above events.

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO THIS SUMMER?

If your summer plans include traveling to warmer climates, you might want to stop by the Donor Closet and pick up a new cooling vest or a neck collar cooler.  There are several new medium size cooling vests available for minimum suggested donations. The neck collar coolers are free and can be used all year round either for cooling or heating.

Weather permitting, we intend to schedule a field trip or two during the summer months for those who are able to get out and about. Our tour guide is putting together a list of possible destinations. If you are interested, call 425-712-1804 to register.

For those of you staying locally, you can always participate in the Wednesday afternoon SG Socials at the Edmonds United Methodist Church. They start at 12:00 noon and last until about 3:00 p.m.  There are about 5 or 6 regulars who bring snacks and something to drink, and enjoy an afternoon playing scrabble and other card games. Occasionally there is a surprise lunch treat provided by the SG. If transportation is a problem, contact Bill Brayer (425-712-1804) and he will try to arrange a ride for you.

If any of you are gamblers and are interested, plans are being considered for putting together a small group to spend an afternoon at the Tulalip Casino. This is one event that can be done either rain or shine. If this type of activity interests you, call Bill Brayer (425-712-1804) and get your name on the list.

Getting out and socializing with others can be very therapeutic and usually kills the boredom that often sets in when one just sits around trying to find something interesting to do.

THE HEARTBEAT OF THE COMMUNITY

For over nine years MS Helping Hands-MSHH has provided services & resources to people with MS who reside in the State of Washington. It has taken quite a while to be recognized but the word is finally getting out.

Civic clubs and organizations such as the Edmonds and Shoreline Chambers of Commerce, Rotary & Kiwanis Clubs, churches, the medical field and many others are now singing the praises of the Donor Closet. The Donor Closet is also getting many referrals from Senior Services, Seattle Aging & Disabilities, Hospitals, Clinics, Hospices and Senior Centers just to name a few.

During the past year and more recently, new volunteers have joined the Donor Closet staff. They have either been clients, have read about it in the news media, or have seen stories about MSHH activities and events on TV. The news media, radio & TV have been very generous with their airtime covering MSHH activities and events with free PSA’s.

The different Turtle logo items, which include t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, pins, and tote bags, and more recently the new Donor Closet Sprinter cargo van with all the Donor Closet graphics painted on it, are generating even more public attention.

MS Helping Hands-MSHH, with the Donor Closet as its main resource, will continue to reach out to people with MS and others by providing needed DME & ME items for minimum suggested donations. Many others with MS residing in the State of Washington have also received financial assistance grants.

The two support groups, Sno-King & Seattle, continue to attract new members by offering interesting and educational programs.

A new resource library is currently available at the Donor Closet providing a variety of information on services & resources available to people with MS.

If you are interested in any of the MSHH Turtle (Toby) Logo items, contact Bill Brayer (425-712-1804) as he will be placing another order soon. It takes about two weeks for delivery.

Donations for Turtle Logo T-shirts are $15, Sweatshirts $25, Polo shirts $20, Zipper Jackets $35, Tote bags $15 and Pins $5. 100% of the donations for these items go into the Financial Assistance Fund to be used to provide financial assistance to people with MS who reside in the State of Washington.

DID YOU KNOW . . .

. . . that six members of the Board of Directors of MS Helping Hands-MSHH have MS, three of whom are officers (the President & both Executive Vice-Presidents)?

At the September 24, 2008 annual Board meeting, the current Board will vote on new Board members and will elect new or re-elect existing Board members & officers whose terms expire on September 30th.

The nominating committee is currently looking for people, with or without MS, to become Board members.

In addition, the President appoints members to an Advisory Committee who wish to be active in the MSHH organization but are not yet ready to become Board members. This allows them the opportunity to compare the two and decide where they feel most comfortable.  The two main differences between the Board and Advisory Committee are that members of the Advisory Committee do not vote, and Board members are required to attend the Board meetings, while members of the Advisory Committee are invited but not required to attend.

MS Helping Hands-MSHH is the only 100% volunteer non-profit 501 (c) (3) MS organization that provides services & resources to people with MS residing in the State of Washington. MSHH was founded in 2000 and continues to grow and provide services & resources not usually offered by other local MS organizations. MSHH has NO administrative, only operational expenses.

MSHH has received local & national recognition several times over the past years for the invaluable services and resources to the MS community and others provided by the many volunteers of MSHH and particularly the MSHH Donor Closet.

Being a member of the Board Advisory Committee gives you an opportunity to present your ideas, thoughts and suggestions on how MSHH can better serve those with MS and their families.

This invitation to serve includes friends and family members who would like to become part of an MS organization that can have an impact and make quite a difference in the lives of people with MS and their immediate families.

If you would like to serve on the Board of Directors or be a member of the Advisory Committee contact Bill Brayer, President, at 425-712-1804.

A SURPRISE BENEFACTOR

At the end of the May 6th Sno-King SG meeting, guest speaker Dr. Ted R. Brown, MD, MPH, who gave an excellent program, presented the SG Facilitator, Bill Brayer, with a generous personal cash donation for the good work being done by MSHH and the Donor Closet.  Evergreen Health Care refers many of their patients to the MSHH Donor Closet.

Dr. Brown also invited Bill Brayer to speak to the Evergreen Hospital MS Center staff and other healthcare professionals who will be invited to a September presentation.

NEVER HAVE SO FEW WORKED SO HARD as the MSHH Celebrity Bowl Benefit Committee.

The five-person committee, spearheaded by co-chairs Rick Anderson & SammyJo Wilkinson, has spent countless hours putting together what hopefully will be an annual event, “The MSHH Celebrity Bowl Benefit.”  The other committee members are Mike Bemis, Mike Purdy and Kelly Collins.

The event is scheduled for Saturday June  7, 2008 at Robin Hood Lanes in Edmonds at 9801 Edmonds Way, Edmonds, WA 98020, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

There will be several sports and media celebrities there, and an auction will be held with several very nice prizes.

If you like to bowl, or know someone who does, register now and come on down. (Refer to the website homepage)
